School to close early

Just had a mail from Nic :

Hello Nic, They sprung on us tonight that they now intend to sell the building privately and therefore want every one out by the end of Nov 06!
We decided to put a note of the mtg round everyone and are calling a mtg at Heeley mon. 14th May @ 7pm for all the buildings users - climbers, artists and community groups.
Basicaly we will be asking everyone -are campaigning for a future for the bldg? If so are they willling to work for it?
We don't think it's a foregone conclusion but it would be an uphill struggle - but I guess climbers are good at that!
We need as many climbers to show up that night as poss. Keep in touch. Best. Keith

Assuming Keith means Nov 07. I need to decide on a project.

Shit the bed! That means i've only got till July, as I'll be out the country after that.
What will become of the boards???????? Burn or re-build?

Re-build surely? I don't think keith would allow them to be burned.
It's pretty shitty that they they sprung this on us as the artists asked them expressely about this issue and they said not until 08 at the earliest.
I can't even climb again til july! if that place goes i'll remain weak forever...

You say surely, but when it comes to the crunch who is likely to have the motivation, space and time to remove, store and rebuild the boards? It'd be nice if someone did, but I wouldn't put money on it happening.

BOOM! I suggest Perky Pinky because it's the most famous indoor problem in the whole world.

Bonjoy. I will personally invest (read; waste) time dismantling, storing, and rebuilding the boards. I think that above all it's a small piece of history that should be preserved.

I've started searching for new location, but it's going to be hard. If you, or anyone else, can spare some time in the search I'm sure everyone would appreciate it.

Keith.

boo! thats the worst news ever. black thursday. god totally rubbish. keith let me know what needs doing. was talking to dylan this eve. he has been looking for a premises for his hold company, he reckoned sheff was tres expensive and there ain't many. but he also said they're much cheaper in rotherham... would peeps be prepared to drive that far?
fuck thats rubbish.

I wouldn't travel to Rotherham. A large part of the School's appeal is the location.
The most (only) obvious location is the Works. Sam tells me they have another currently unused unit of a similar size to the one already in use.

I think the worst thing that could happen to those boards is for them to go to the works, they struggle to cope with my tiny weight.
Just imaging the amount of traffic that board would get in one night down the works compared with one month up the school. It just wouldn't last.

thats my concern with them going to the works. Plus, I dont think they should be made publically accessible, their exclusivity is part of their charm. I dont want to go to the board and have to wait whilst andi_e has a go on basic jez.

One of that boards great strengths is that its not open to all and we all know each other. I dont want to share!

Keith and I looked into this yesterday and found only really expensive massive commerical spaces. Thats going to be the big problem for us, finding somewhere not geared up for a commercial let. And that was another thing that was so unique about the school, it wasnt a warehouse, it was a studio.

I can probably fit the 30 in my cellar, but it would need trimming, and it wouldnt be open to all at all times!

Seb thought we should burn it!

Bentley said the same although I think it was more in the vein of not letting it fall into the hands of the enemy!
I looked when the woodie (RIP) was closed and couldn't find anything nearly affordable, maybe sheffield forums is a good place to look for something that isn't just another industrial unit.
I agree with you Dobbin about not wanting to queue for Basic Jez etc but just look at the amount of holds currently breaking, think if that Mr Muscle guy from the works was allowed to pull on it...

Paul Bennett said...

did you happen to get the dimensions of the place?

bonjoy said...

Yes, yes, yes, exclusivity, broken holds, queues for Basic Jez etc. That's all well and good and I don't disagree with any of it, but the fact still remains, the chances of finding any other suitable (in Sheffield, the right size, affordable) space are so miniscule it's just not going to happen IMO. By all mean look around (like Paul did unsuccessfully after the Edge woody shut), but ultimately I think it will come down to a choice between The Works or the skip.

Paul Bennett said...

I'd choose the skip or a damn good bonfire over it getting trashed in the public domain.

Lets hope there's time to get the boards down in time for Nov 5th then
